The slide show and short video above were taken at the annual PAINT-OUT in 2011. The video was taken when the evening meal was being prepared by Dixie, the chef, with Nereda and Dell as happy assistants. There is a "studio room" at the Centre where artists can set up and leave their art gear. The immediate surrounding bushland has a creek and end of a lake in the valley just below, or one can drive through the Numinbah Valley finding places to stop and draw, paint or photograph. There are two cafes along the road on the way to Natural Bridge, one having a comfortable verandah from which to paint (as long as you buy at least a coffee there). The scenic view of the Hinze Dam is close by in the other direction and now has a fully developed visiting centre and coffee bar. Accommodation at the Environmental Education Centre is in six cabins set in the bushland with double decker beds in each, with ramp access to two of these cabins. Comfortable matresses are supplied but own pillows and bed linen are required. A large kitchen is available but own plates, cups, cutlery, etc. are needed. A week-end stay at the Centre is a wonderful opportunity to soak in the natural surroundings - the farms, hills, bushland, rainforest and the well-known Natural Bridge (famous for its glow-worms) not far away.
The Centre is marked on the Gold Coast section of the UBD - Map 46, C17. Going from Brisbane, the Pacific Highway exit is number 69 - Map 27, L17

ANNUAL LILIAN PEDERSON PRESENTATION
The Half Dozen Group has played a critical role in the development and promotion of the arts in Brisbane, according to cultural historian, Judy Hamilton. During an entertaining and informative Lilian Pedersen Annual Presentation, Judy talked about her research into community arts groups in Brisbane, including the HDG. “The HDG was critical in building up what I call cultural institutional thickness, which is about increasing the scale of community engagement with art,” shesaid.
Judy told the 40 members and guests present that having widespread engagement and artistic opportunities lis important in case a really talented artist should appear. Those who were associated with the group included William Robinson, Lloyd Rees, Margaret Preston, Sydney Long, Hal Missingham and Melville Haysom. Judy spoke of the importance of introducing new artistic ideas to the Brisbane art scene. “Many members of the HDG in those days were from down south, and many travelled, including Margaret Cilento, to New York, to work with the likes of Mark Rothko.
This meant the group was at the forefront of modernism in the city, which didn’t always impress the critics.” She said one critic was so negative, she was asked not to attend HDG exhibitions! A special guest at the event was Roberta Ott, who is the grand daughter of one of the founders of the HDG, Mona Elliott. After the presentation, members and guests enjoyed the convivial atmosphere, great food (thanks to Trevor Webb) and authentic sangria, (thanks to Mags!)
December 2012 The ANNUAL LILIAN PEDERSEN LECTURE 'A Place of Our Own' 'Tracing the Peripatetic history of the Queensland Art gallery until its settling on the South Bank of the Brisbane River ) and some 'behind the scenes' stories.)'
Guest speaker: John Massy John Massy is a retired Audience Development Manager and Education Officer of the Queensland Art Gallery. His talk was informative and entertaining giving us all a greater appreciation of our own State Gallery. Many of us remember well its early days in the Bowen Hills Museum building so its history was walking us through our own student days with fond memories. The whole evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the many members and friends who attended, some of whom joined John for a light dinner in the Studio before the talk. See photos above
October 2012 THE ANNUAL 'PAINT-OUT' Last year's annual "paint -out' was in October at Numinbah Valley in perfect weather. The accommodation again was at the Environmental Educational Centre. Below are some shots of the happy group, often seen eating, otherwise out in the landscape with brush and canvas.
August 2012 The 'ALL-IN-TOGETHER DAY' An 'in-house' event at the Montrose Studio It was a successful fun day of sharing knowledge and ideas with other members demonstrating techniques of various art forms, matt-board cutting and discussing things of interest. It was casual and spontaneous, enhanced with a lunch of sausages and onions on the BBQ, salads and other goodies., There will definitely be more of these events.
July 2012 STUDIO VISIT to the studio of Wendy Allen at Manly Studio visits are always rewarding. Artists meet together, study the work seen in the Studio and discuss their own work to interested listeners. They invariably meet up with new ideas, techniques and materials and go home inspired. The Manly venue has the added attraction of refreshments on the deck overlooking Moreton Bay. Photos below.
May 2012 The 'GATHERING OF THE GROUPS' This event took place at the Montrose Studio. The Half Dozen Group of Artists invited other Brisbane art groups that are a part of BVAC (Brisbane Visual Arts Community), to a social get-together and sharing of artworks. This important newly-formed group comprises art societies such as ATASDA (Textile and Surface Design), Watercolour Society of Qld, Pastel Society of Australia, Qld Quilters, Sculptors Qld, Access Arts, Embroiderers Guild, Scattered Arts, Fusions ... It was a very happy occasion spent inside the Studio followed by taking our coffee out under the jacaranda tree and listening to Lyn from ATASDA tell us about her magnificent textile work some of which was passed around for closer viewing. See photographs below.

The extra work that workshop leaders do to keep all the groups running smoothly is much appreciated by all. In thanking the leaders, President, Anna Reynolds said the workshop leaders do much more than the practical running of the groups. "They are the people who make new members feel welcome, which is a really important part of the HDG ethos," she said.
STUDIO VISIT On the weekend of 28 - 29 April 2013, we held our first Studio Visit for the year at Manly with Wendy Allen. Studio visits are invaluable and give artists the opportunity to see how others set up their studios and go about their work. It was a rewarding weekend all round with discussions going in all directions and a demonstration here and there. More please! Any other members willing to open up their studios? Contact David or Anna.
October 2014 A special photo shoot was arranged for all HDG Members at the Corinda Studio. Unfortunately only a small percentage of current members were able to attend the shoot which resulted in the lovely photo below.
HDGA Annual Xmas Party On 17th December members and guests gathered at the Studio for an evening of fun and festivity. A lovely time was had by all in attendance, and the works brought in for display were greatly admired and appreciated.
HDGA Stall at the 2015 Sherwood Community Festival On Friday 13th November 2015, the Half Dozen Group of Artists participated in the 2015 Sherwood Community Festival event. Some snaps taken on the night are pictured below:
Montville and Maleny Excursion - 19.9.2015 Saturday 19th September 2015 saw 40 HDGA members and their guest assemble at the Studio for a 9 am departure to the Monteville and Maleny area. The purpose of the trip was to explore as many as possible of the fine art and craft shops and galleries that inhabit the area. And a wonderful day was had by all as, in both towns, everyone was free to explore at leisure. With beautiful scenery and many lovely galleries and stores to visit, the day passed all too quickly. On the return journey, the bus driver took a slight detour so that passengers could obtain an uninterrupted view of the Glass House Mountains. This gesture was much appreciated, with many on board taking photos of the panoramic views.
Re-Creation of Manet's "The Bar At The Folies-Bergere" - 3.08.2015 On Monday 3rd August, the Monday morning workshop group entered into the spirit of re-creating and then capturing a likeness of the famous painting of "The Bar At The Folies-Bergere". The new concept was enthusiastically embraced by the large group, with most donning accessories or outfits imitating the fashions of the painting's era. A suggestion that an annual event be conducted in a similar vein was welcomed by all. A fun morning indeed!
Day out on the Samford Art Trail - 27.6.2015 On Saturday 27th June, an enthusiastic busload of members and friends enjoyed a half day of visiting several pre-selected destinations of interest along the popular Samford Art Trail. Samford Village was the first stop for a lovely devonshire morning tea and visit to a nearby studio. The group then visited several other studios throughout the area and spoke with artists who exhibited a range of inspirational works. Artwork on display included ceramics, felt weaving and dyeing, wood and resin turning, traditional painting and mixed media works. The group also enjoyed the beautiful scenery en route to the various studios. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The HDGA's annual Christmas party was held in the Studio on 24th November 16. A good crowd of members and friends attended and enjoyed a great social evening! The delicious party fare was provided by those in attendance and it was great to see some artwork on display on the walls of the studio gallery. President, Anna Reynolds gave a short speech in which she thanked all those who contributed to the group's achievements throughout 2016. During 2016 some significant improvements were made to the studio, including installation of gallery lighting and interior painting, the anti-graffiti mural and new concrete paths. Here are some photos from the Christmas party:
"ART IN THE PARK" - 22ND OCT - EXHIBITION/MARKET DAY/OPENING OF MURAL
The HDGA's inaugural in-studio exhibition, market day and the opening of the anti-graffiti mural by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, was a great success! As well as the exhibition of members' work, the mural, market stalls and official ceremony, a steady stream of visitors and members also enjoyed coffee and cake beneath the canopy of the big, old tree while listening to lovely, live entertainment provided by Gemma Johnston. Gemma is a vocalist with a broad range of styles who can be contacted on 0478 8582 388 or g.johnston25@outlook.com. Each "cafe" table contained crayons and was covered in paper so that patrons could doodle creatively, if they wished - and there were some lovely drawings to be seen at the end of the day! Young visitors were thrilled with free face painting and enjoyed playing with clay & painting mini dinosaurs. The sausage sizzle and soft drinks marquee and the cake stall were very popular spots.

Some of the works viewed were: painting, ceramics, printmaking, millinery, glass, bookbinding, illuminate manuscript making, feltmaking, basket weaving, pottery and leather works.
